Forexpulse Strathmore House is a transitional sober living program that offers experienced staff, reliable services and competent care. The program is designed to provide male residents 18 and over with a comfortable, safe and structured environment. MASH has been working for several years in Massachusetts to ensure that sober homes are a safe and positive environment for residents. In 2007, several sober houses in Massachusetts came together to set standards for their industry and formed MASH.
Our treatment center offers a range of treatment programs for helping residents conquer addiction, including residential and intensive outpatient programs. Sober living homes—also referred to as recovery homes—are structured living environments that emphasize recovery and continuing treatment on an outpatient basis. These residences are sometimes affiliated with or partnered with, nearby drug and alcohol treatment centers.
Many housing programs call themselves “sober homes” and might in fact offer a healthy and sober living environment. But homes that are certified must stick to strict standards that the state can get behind. MASH-certified houses must uphold several core principles that ensure the houses are well operated, maintain the rights of residents, are recovery-oriented, and promote health. Certification is voluntary, and the Helpline refers callers only to certified homes.
The Boston Community
The Bureau of Substance Addiction Services of the MA Department of Public Health is contracting with two organizations to apply national standards to these homes, made specific to include Massachusetts laws. These organizations – the Massachusetts Association for Sober Housing and the Recovery Homes Collaborative inspect and certify the homes, as well as provide training and technical assistance to sober housing operators seeking certification. We do not show halfway houses, treatment programs, or rehabilitation facilities. If you have many outside commitments, or are ready to return to work, Teras can be a good entry point directly from treatment. For others, after 1-6 months at Tharros, clients may choose to transition to Teras. I would move out into my own home, but near my community, I decided. Within six months, I found myself back in crisis, lost in desperation, and far from the sober way I had envisioned. I had heard that when you drink again, you “pick up where you left off”. This was certainly the case for me as I found myself ready to leap from the 17th floor of my apartment building- only a higher power could have kept me alive through the events to follow. Their medical and clinical directors guide individuals through an assessment to determine which drug and alcohol treatment fits best. ASAM’s criteria uses six dimensions to create a holistic, biopsychosocial assessment of an individual to be used for planning and treatment across all levels of care. However, most sober living homes strongly encourage or require that residents attend community support groups—such as Alcoholics Anonymous and 12-Step Groups—or attend outpatient treatment through a nearby addiction rehab center. We carefully screen each application and conduct a telephone screen prior to approval to ensure a good fit in our homes. Crisis centers operate a 24/7 toll-free hotline for phone counseling, questions and referrals. Our staff is certified by the Bureau of Substance Abuse, CCRI, and other recovery Community classes. After a referral is received, our Housing Coordinator will reach out to the individual to schedule an intake appointment. To refer an ATR participant for sober home assistance and placement, authorized portals should complete this referral form and upload any required documentation. Our referral form is password protected, and only Authorized Referral Portals have access to make a referral.

ATR only funds participants to live in sober homes that are certified by the Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing , which is the primary agency for accountability of all certified sober homes in Massachusetts. MassHousing is an independent, quasi-public agency created in 1966 and charged with providing financing for affordable housing in Massachusetts. The Agency raises capital by selling bonds and lends the proceeds to low- and moderate-income homebuyers and homeowners, and to developers who build or preserve affordable and/or mixed-income rental housing. MassHousing does not use taxpayer dollars to sustain its operations, although it administers some publicly funded programs on behalf of the Commonwealth.
